SOLANUM TORNUM (Turkey Berry)



Beduru or Kwahu Nsusoa is a popular vegetable in Ghana that is used in many dishes but how many of us know its English name and its medicinal properties? Well if you have ever wondered, the right name in English is (Turkey Berries with the scientific name of Solanum torvum). Its origin is Africa.

Research has shown the effectiveness of turkey berries in treating anemia and other variety of stomach ailments.  We dry the turkey berries and make wonderful gravy with them. Regular consumption of this vege raises the blood count. 

You all will be amazed to know the uses of this small plant that we commonly find in our home garden if you come to know about its characteristics. The Turkey Berry fruit is green in color and it appears like a very small brinjal.

NOTE: The Turkey Berry that grows in hilly areas has a more bitter taste than that of the berries that are grown in our house garden.

USES OF TURKEY BERRY:    
We can consume the fresh Turkey Berries plucked from the plant and also we can consume them in the dried form. It has the potential to kill germs and also acts as a medicine for colds, and also helps in problems related to the chest and stomach.  People who have diarrhea, stomach ache, piles, or tuberculosis should use Turkey berries as a part of their food for treatment. Taking Turkey Berry regularly will help in strengthening the nerves.
